About This Item

[African American] Archive of 9 items on the life of young African American woman who attended Hampton University, in Hampton, Virginia. The archive consist of 7 photographs and two postcard letters. Photographs range in size from 1.75" x 1" to 10" x 8" inches, with most around 4" x 2" inches. Original black and white silver gelatin prints. This archive documents educational achievement among young African American women in the 1940s. Hampton University is one of the nation's most prominent HBCUs. One photo indicates that one of these women (Myree Lott) graduated in 1951 from Edwards High School in Gonzales, Texas, just outside San Antonio. Hampton University postcard postmarked September 1944. The letter on verso reads: I am glad you have still got work. Things began to look a little blue here." Seemed to be signed "Wilson to Bertha." The other postcard reads "Thanks for the card. We had a marvelous rain last night... Made peach jelly, canned vegetables, soup of tomatoes so far this week." There is a baby photo with caption on verso of the child's name "Cynthia Elaine Brown, 1953." In very good condition overall.
