About This Item

Winnipeg: Historic Resources Branch, 1990. Paper bound, quarto, illustrated throughout, vi + Pp90. Includes selected bibliography. Except for previous owner name neatly at bottom inside of rear cover, an unmarked, very good or better copy. 330 grams. From the Introduction: ""Traditional Mennonite Architecture in the R.M. of Stanley is an analysis and a selected inventory of the best remaining examples of the district's early Mennonite buildings. The research for this study was undertaken in two steps. During the summer of 1982, a detailed photographic inventory with some measured recording of buildings within the municipality was conducted. The material assembled from this inventory was used to analyse and assess the remaining early architecture in the area and to identify major building types, methods of construction, and stylistic trends. Local historical publications and other secondary sources of information were consulted in preparing the historical discussions. An analysis of the evolution of architecture in the municipality is described in the first section of this report. This includes an overview of the history of both Mennonite and Anglo-Ontario settlement in the area, the cultural traditions of the Mennonite settlers and a description of the major Mennonite building types and tends prior to 1945. The Selected Inventory section of the report is comprised of photographs and descriptions of particular, existing buildings. These were selected because they were superior or typical examples of specific building types, construction types or architectural styles. Basic information, including the location and date of construction, where known, has been included for a more comprehensive assessment of the architectural resources in the municipality.""
