Attorney and legal scholar Archibald Cox carried forward the legacy of his grandfather, attorney William Maxwell Everts (President Andrew Johnson impeachment trial of 1868) into the President Richard Nixon Watergate scandal as a Special Prosecutor of objectivity and integrity. The Attorney General was Elliot Richardson. Nixon's order (the Stennis compromise) that no White House tapes would be necessary as evidence in the Watergate investigation brought forth Richardson's resignation, and that of his Assistant A.G. Wm. Ruckelshaus (both reusing to give Cox that order or to fire him), and the dismissal of Cox as Special Prosecutor. Known as the Saturday Night Massacre, Cox's final words while still the S.P., "Whether ours shall continue to be a government of laws and not of men is now for Congress and ultimately the American people". Nixon would later resign the Presidency of the United States.
