About This Item

Minneapolis, MN: Archaeus Project, 1988. First edition. Paperback. Like New. First edition, 1988. Stapled wraps as issued. Unused. Light wear from storage. Eugene Taylor was a special friend of the ARCHAEUS PROJECT. He brought deep historical and personal insight to bear on matters of consciousness. As an investigator, academic and author - he dug deep into the American and psychological and philosophical legacies, finding a link between them in an unpublished lecture by William James in the Harvard archives on “On Exceptional Mental States.” The William James of the 19th century was resuscitated in the 20th by Taylor who conducted an exhaustive study of marginalia in James's books and other materials given to Harvard by the James family in 1926. The James lectures he reconstructed were about how abnormal psychological states provide insights into the nature of reality. He published the revived Lowell lectures in book form, and then, in 1978-79, when Eugene was appointed the William James lecturer at Harvard Divinity School, he completed the reincarnation of William James by actually giving those lectures again, one by one, completely reconstructed, at the Cambridge Swedenborg Society. "Taylor became one of the true visionaries of humanistic psychology. Indeed, the stateside 'visionary tradition' (Taylor, 1993) in psychology was the axis around which this ardent and erudite life pervasively spun."(Cited from memorial articles footnoted at wiki). RIP.
