About This Item

New Orleans: In Arcane Logos, 1969. The inaugural issue of this relatively short-lived underground newspaper published in New Orleans and founded by disaffected staff members of The Word, New Orleans' first underground newspaper. A few dozen issues were published in 1969, but it appears to have dissolved in December of that year.

This issue begins with a poem by L. S. Carstater and an essay by counterculture cult leader Mel Lyman, followed by an editorial on In Arcane Logos' inauspicious founding. There is a long article reprinted from the Georgia Straight on "Good Sex," with shorter articles on the right wing's anti-sex ed agenda and on authoritarianism among revolutionary movements. Also included is a centerfold spread of two unattributed art works and Mel Lyman's review of William Buckley Firing Line, in which he debated Norman Mailer. Gilbert Shelton's "Scenes from the Revolution: The Motorcycle Outlaws Versus the Rednecks at the Highway Beer Joint," which was originally published in the underground comic Feds N Heads, is printed on the back cover.

Tabloid format printed in black and blue on newsprint, [12] p., illus. Light wear, about near fine.
