About This Item

New York:: The Viking Press,, (1987). Hardcover first edition -. Fine in fine dust jacket.. First US printing. An English pilgrim is on his way to the shrine of Saint Catherine to medieval Cairo with an additional task of spying on suspicious activities at the Mameluke court, but when he arrives in Cairo in 1486 he contracts a mysterious disease that causes hallucinations powerful enough to threaten his sanity. One review called this a "distinctive blend of the seductive and the disturbing, its atmosphere constantly shifting from sumptuously learned orientalizing to grotesque erotic adventure and dry humor" (City Limits) Originally published in 1984, this 1987 Viking edition has some revisions. Illustrated with 19th century lithographs by David Roberts. Includes a note on the artist. 282 pp. Illustrated endpapers.
