About This Item

London: Cassell, 1978. xii, 224pp; index. Or black cloth in ajcket. Some spotting/foxing to page edges. Minimal edge wear to jacket. Lt Glubb was one of 350 volunteers to go to Iraq in 1919 where a tribal rebellion had broken out. The rebellion was soon suppressed, followed by the inauguration of Air Control, under which the RAF took over from the army. He served as Special Service Officer with the RAF until 1926 when he resigned his commission and became an Administrative Inspector under the Iraq government. He was deeply involved in tribal control, the abolition of tribal raiding, and the protection of the Iraqi tribes from the massacring raids of the fanatical Wahhabis. Fascinating document in the history of the Middle East illuminating the benevolent ideals and political blunders of the British policy between the wars, but above all it is a loving tribute to the vanishing way of life of the desert Arab and a tribute to the Britons who in the days of empire gave up home and family to work for the peoples they were called upon to serve.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Fine. 8vo.
