Folio leather-spined embossed cloth gilt on bevelled boards (rebacked tips slightly worn spine gilt darkened & dulled) All Edges Gilt. Unique gilt and illuminated chromoliths inserted into sunken card mounts back to back. Double pages except for the final plate which is printed on the front (recto) only. Slight foxing to mounts but clean and lovely. *A lavish production in high Victorian style with central texts with large illuminated first capital letter and other ornaments surrounded by decorative frame. A wide shaped border incorporating a pictorial miniature then decorates the page with floral emblems of vines and trellises in a stunning background of colors. *Based on the idea of a mediaeval illuminated page displaying the virtuosity of Victorian chromo-lithography as beautifully executed by Day & Son. Quite difficult to find, this is a stunning early gift book.

V.1 has bookplate and pencil notations of prior owner and booksellers, no other markings. The first four leaves after the map are loose at the bottom and remain attached at the top. Volume 2 has the original binding, no interior markings of any kind. Both preface and title page are dated 1878. **This copy has two sepia photographs pasted in, opposite to and on verso of title page, with the handwritten names of George Kenning and of A F A Woodford; these are in different hands, but it is not known if they are actually signatures of the two men** Woodford compiled and edited the book, which is a condensation of the immense work by Mackey; Kenning sponsored and published the work. Alphabetical. Includes list of subscribers. Publisher's catalog at rear. -- Hardcover, blue cloth with gold and black embossed decorations, front cover and spine, including gold portraits of three Grand Masters. The Man of Feeling is a sentimental novel published in 1771, written by Scottish author Henry Mackenzie. The novel presents a series of moral vignettes which the naïve protagonist Harley either observes, is told about, or participates in. This novel is often seen to contain elements of the Romantic novel, which became prolific in the years following its publishing. The Man of Feeling, Mackenzie's first and most famous novel, was begun in London in 1767. It was published in April 1771, sold out by the beginning of June, and reached its sixth edition by 1791.
