Appx. 11 Steel engravings in each volume. Great shelf appeal! Vol. 1 Aaron-Crandall (1887): xii + 768 pp., includes 11 "Portraits on Steel." Vol. 2 Crane-Grimshaw (1887): x + 768 pp., 10 portraits. Vol. 3 Grinnell-Lockwood (1887): x + 752, 10 portraits. Vol. 4 Lodge-Pickens (1888): x + 768 pp., 10 portraits. Vol. 5 Pickering-Sumter (1888): x + 752 pp. Vol. 6 Sunderland-Zurita, with supplement and analytical index (1889): X + 809 pp.Some have said there are up to 200 fictitious biographies of non-existent characters in these volumes.
