About This Item

Imprimerie de Steuben Freres. Bale. 1864. Steuben Freres. 1864. First edition thus. Limited to 200 sets only, this being number 94. The 8 parts are very handsomely bound in two volumes. 17 x 10cm. Half vellum gilt with contrasting leather labels and marbled boards. Pages browned with occasional foxing otherwise a remarkably clean and sound set. SCARCE. Nerciat (17391800) was a soldier, poet, composer, playwright and novelist, and a spy under both the Ancien Rgime and the Republic. He travelled to countries throughout Europe during the course of his busy, sometimes turbulent career, and spent most of the last two years of his life in prison after being arrested by French forces in Italy in 1798, probably for his activities as a double agent. He is mostly remembered today for his libertine writings, including Flicia, ou mes frdaines (Flicia, or My Frolics) in 1775, Le diable au corps (Devil in the Flesh) in 1789, and Les Aphrodites.
