One of the rarest imprints of an uncommon title by seventeenth century German Roman Catholic theologian and devotional writer, Jacob Merlo Horstius (1597-1644). Edited by Redemptorist priest and scholar Fr. Joseph Aloysius Krebs ('textum recensuit adjectisque precibus ante et post missam denuo edidit Jos. Aloisius Krebs; praemittitur vita auctoris una cum effigie ejus'). Horstius, born in Horst, Holland, from whence he derives his name, was a prominent doctor of theology known as an effective preacher at the Lyskirchen in Cologne, where he served as pastor and where he died in 1644. He authored and edited numerous works, including a devotional prayer book (Paradisus Animae, or Paradise of the Christian Soul), and he edited a highly respected commentary of Estius on the Pauline Letters, as well as the works of St. Bernard in two volumes, and the works of Thomas a Kempis (with Horstius' commentary). In addition, Horstius compiled 'Septem Tubae Orbis Christiani,' a compilation from the writings of the fathers intended for young Roman Catholic priests.
