About This Item

Early broadside of this important appeal, probably printed in East Germany in January 1990 (judging from a printer's mark at lower left). The declaration states the key goals of the eponymous group, which spoke out against impending climate catastrophe and the threat of human extinction. Its key demand was the unilateral complete military disarmament of the GDR by the year 2000. The authors appeal to Germany's former greatness, mentioning Dürer, Bach, and Goethe, but also remind of the evils of two world wars and genocide. Thus they buttress their appeal to all "peace-loving people" to demand that their political representatives write these demands into their party programs. The program of demilitarization was supported by broad masses of civilians, as well as by numerous politicians and army leaders, as documented by the lists of signatories which soon began to circulate. The text was written in December 1989 and probably first published in the newspaper "Neue Zeit" on December 9, 1989. This broadside not recorded in KVK, OCLC.
