Moscow: Progress Publishers, 1976. Second printing revised 1981. Hardcover. Yellow Boards with Black Lettering on Spine. Original, Very Good Condition/good, Brodart covered. Covers illustrated by V. Noskov. Translated by various translators such as Olga Shartse, Alex Miller, Robert Daglish, et al. A small photo of the author at the beginning of each story. This two-volume Anthology contains the short stories of 60 Soviet writers, representing the multinational Soviet literature. It is a literary chronicle of the life of Soviet society from the Revolution of 1917 to our days. From the flames of the Revolution, through the development of virgin lands in Kazakhstan, life in besieged Leningrad during the Second World War, and on to the construction of the canal across the Karakum desert. From a northern Russian village, to an aul in Turkmenia. A panorama of events and a gallery of characters are conjured up. These are stories by the classics and founders of Soviet literature, and also by writers belonging to a more recent generation. A whole epoch divides Victor Astafiev from Maxim Gorky, Yuri Kazakov from Alexander Grin, and Chinghiz Aitmatov from Abdullah Kakhar, but there is a strong inner link in their stories as they embody the unity of aims and aspirations of the Soviet peoples trying to build a new society of that day.
Vol 1 - 426pp, Vol 2 - 446pp. DJs a little chipped and edgeworn but now in protective covers, no inscriptions, clean internally.
