Late in life Humboldt worked on this substantially revised third edition. The book is based on his researches in South and Central America and contains chapters on the steppes and deserts; on the waterfalls of the Orinoco River (Venezuela); on nocturnal animal life in the forests; on the structure and workings of volcanoes; on the vital force of the Rohdian Genius (a short story); and on the highlands of Cajamarca the old Inca residence of Atahuallpa, with the first view of the South Sea from the back of the Andes chain.
