About This Item
New York: The Viking Press, 1947. 1st/1st. VG/VG. First edition. First printing with "Published by Viking in April 1947" on the copyright page. The book is tight and square with solid hinges, good tips, and clean tan boards. Textblock is clean with no writing, bookplate or markings and not BCE, ex-library or remaindered. Pages lightly tanned. Dust jacket is unclipped ($2.00). Light chipping to spine ends, corners and a chip to the front panel near spine. Protected in a Brodart mylar cover.
The play takes place in the 1880s. Marcus Hubbard, rich, despotic and despised, made a fortune during the Civil War by running the blockade--and worse. In his family life, he is equally injurious. Hellman directed the Broadway production that opened on November 20, 1946, at the Fulton Theatre, where it ran for 182 performances. Patricia Neal, making her Broadway debut, won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress.
