New York: Hodder & Stoughton, unknown. Hardcover. Good/None. Three Volumes. 329, 352, 329 uncut pages. Illustrated with 37 plates. Watts, George Frederic. 1817-1904. English painter and sculptor. Exhibited A Wounded Heron (1837); won prize (1842) for cartoon Caractacus; won British competition in oils (1847) with King Alfred; commissioned to fresco George and the Dragon in Hall of Poets of the Houses of Parliament (1848-53). Painted series of about 300 portraits of distinguished contemporaries (1864-95), including Garibaldi, Thiers, Guizot; painted symbolical pictures and moral allegories including Life' s Illusions (1849), Watchman, What of the Night (1880), Hope (1886), Love and Death (1877, 1896); as sculptor executed monuments including bronze equestrian statues of Hugo Lupus (1884) and Physical Energy (1904). Volume Three with one small spot along outer front hinge edge, this volume VG. Volumes One and Two Fine. Record # 220695
