About This Item

New York: The John Day Company, 1944. First Edition. Landon's semi-fictionalized novel based on the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, a widowed mother of two who was invited by the King of Siam (Thailand) to teach his wives and children the English language and western customs. Basis for John Cromwell's 1946 film of the same name, and Walter Lang's well-loved 1956 film The King and I, starring Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr. An attractive copy of a war-time edition which went into numerous printings. First Printing. Octavo (21cm); brown cloth, with titling and decorations stamped in gilt on spine; bright yellow topstain; dustjacket; [iv],v-viii,360pp; illus. Hint of dustiness to cover, with small patch of rough erasure to upper front pastedown; Near Fine. Dustjacket is price-clipped, lightly rubbed and a little wavy, with a small tear to lower front panel, and a faint vertical crease along the rear joint; Very Good+ or better.
