New Zealand: Whitcombe & Tombes, 1904. Very Scarce First Ed of 1,000 copies (NZNB H1582). Frederick Wollaston Hutton and James Drummond. An important early work, the book focuses on native vertebrates, so the bulk of the content relates to birds, it also describes marine mammals, reptiles, and bats, and gives brief coverage to introduced species with 147 ills, indexes of Maori, English and scientific names. CONDITION Green cloth half bound with cloth embossed in faux crocodile, bright gilt titles, 381 pages printed on high gloss paper. A little wear to spine and small mark to front, 2 names to front paste down one being S Thorne George secretary and son in law to Governor Grey, later Mayor of Parnell. Overweight. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
