About This Item
London: George Routledge and Sons, 1870. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. Oblong 4to. No date but Copac cites 1870. Pp. [4], 83, [1]. Fine hand-coloured tinted lithographic frontispiece plate with 19 further hand-coloured tinted lithographic plates, representing Animal and plant life of different parts of the world. Each plate with a blank guard leaf. Original blue cloth binding with gilt lettering, very good with a little general wear and rubbing, very small professional repair to the cloth at the head of the spine. Contents clean and tight, original yellow coated end papers, slight spotting to frontispiece plate otherwise unmarked without inscriptions, small repaired tear to the corner of the plate of The great African desert, first gatherings slightly out of line but binding remains tight. A very good copy. The tinted hand-coloured illustrations in this work are superb: it is shame that the artist and lithographer are not credited..
