About This Item

Boston: The Bibliophile Society, 1903. Limited edition. Hardcover. One of ten copies signed by William Bixby for presentation, with "Compliments of W. K. Bixby" at ffep. William Bixby owned the original manuscript of Andre's journal, which ws not discovered until 1902. Includes an important account of the British Army during the Revolutionary War. A beautiful production, printed for members of the Bibliophile Society, and limited to 487 copies.

William K. Bixby was a self-made man, born in 1874, who became the head of American Car & Foundry, a St. Louis corporation that made railroad cars. His major beneficiaries were the St. Louis Art Museum, Washington University and the Missouri Historical Society & History Museum. Bixby served lengthy terms as president or vice president of the Historical Society over more than two decades. Many of the books in his collection were given to the Museum, including the The Nuremberg Chronicle (1493), and papers of Thomas Jefferson.

2 volumes. Small 4to, (xx) 135pp, & (xii), 78pp, 38 maps & plans, facsimiles and two signed engraved etched portraits by W.H.W. Bicknell. Top edges gilt. Bound in full white vellum, lettered in gilt, with gilt crest. Howes A 239. Some light dusting on vellum, a beautiful copy overall.
