About This Item

Stuttgart, Germany: J. G. Cotta, 1957. First German edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. Inscribed by the author to his editor William Targ, in German, or 'Jerry Talk' as Kantor notes at the end of the inscription. 1957, First German edition of this Civil War novel that was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Hardcover, black cloth. Near Fine in a Very Good dust jacket; sound, clean copy. The DJ is rubbed and lightly soiled; shallow chips at the spine ends; a few other short tears, including a small chip along the spine; DJ is now housed in a mylar wrap. William 'Bill' Targ was an editor at World, who published the American edition of this book in 1955, and then Putnam's, as well as a major bibliophile. According to the Pulitzer Prize's official website, "On May 25, 1955, when he received the final pages of the novel, [William] Targ wrote: 'I feel something historical about this day. . . . No matter what happens, you've written the biggest, the most moving novel I've read by any American (excepting perhaps Moby Dick).'" German text, international edition of this Pulitzer winner with a great association.
