About This Item

London: W. H. Allen, 1956. First UK edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Inscribed by the author to his editor William Targ. 1956, First UK edition of this Civil War novel that was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in the same year. Hardcover, red cloth. The paper has age-toned, otherwise a sharp, clean copy in a Very Good dust jacket that has shallow chips and tears at the spine ends, as well as upper edge of the rear panel; other light rubbing to the DJ as well, which is now housed in a mylar wrap. William 'Bill' Targ was an editor at World, who published the American edition of this book in 1955, and then Putnam's, as well as a major bibliophile. According to the Pulitzer Prize's official website, "On May 25, 1955, when he received the final pages of the novel, [William] Targ wrote: 'I feel something historical about this day. . . . No matter what happens, you've written the biggest, the most moving novel I've read by any American (excepting perhaps Moby Dick).'" A terrific association copy of this Pulitzer winner.

Synopsis

"The greatest of our Civil War novels."— The New York Times . The 1955 Pulitzer Prize-winning story of the Andersonville Fortress and its use as a concentration camp-like prison by the South during the Civil War.
