About This Item

This is a copy of the first US trade edition of Rackham's Andersen's Fairy Tales, published by David McKay & Co. using the sheets, printed in England, of the first UK trade -- that is, the editions are identical except that Harrap gilt-stamped 'David McKay' on the bottom spine. There have been innumerable small-format reprints of the book, generally missing some of its 12 full-page color plates and most of its charm, leaving a choice between a copy of this first trade edition or the deluxe limited vellum edition of 525 numbered copies which neither of us can afford. The only other decision to make is whether to go for one of the strangely numerous copies of this edition that still have their original dust jacket and (sometimes) original gift box. I don't know where all these jackets and gift boxes suddenly started coming from, but I'm not ready to say I'm suspicious yet. Those are also expensive, and this one isn't cheap, but at least the price won't give you a nosebleed. I may also have a cheaper, externally thrashed copy still for sale. | Quarto in red cloth, pictorial gilt stamp of Rackham art on front and spine. The full-page color plates come with printed tissue guards and pictorial end papers. Solid, tight, square binding. Bright gilt on front cover and gilt top, spine gilt bright but slightly faded. Some fading to spine cloth apparently in connection with a mostly removed water stain there. Top and bottom spine cloth is bumped, various small imperfections. Front board a-ok, endpapers are clean and unfaded. Interior VG+. All plates are present and pristine. Printed tissue guards are all present and straight, some with minor imperfections. Very little shelf wear. Owner's name is inked on second free endpaper. Tiny sticker hidden on the inner corner of the rear free endpaper, like those Brentano's stickers that one sees. (The Times Book Club was not actually a book club, but a bookseller owned by the London newspaper of that name.)

Synopsis

Originally published in 1991, this collection of classic fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen, illustrated by internationally acclaimed artist Lisbeth Zwerger, has been expanded -- three stories added -- and completely redesigned.

Reviews

On Apr 9 2018, a reader said:
The book is awesome, but this posting is confusing. Are the illustrations the Syck originals, or have they been modified by E. Zeerger? It is a First Edition, But not THE first PUBLISHED edition, as that was in the 1950s. I have a copy of this, but the registration of the colors in the color plates was way off, making the illustrations difficult to view and appreciate, to put it mildly!!

Terms of Sale

Acme Book & Anvil

We have a 30-day return guarantee with full refund. The refund includes original shipping costs only if the item is not as described in the listing, or under the theoretical possibility that it arrived damaged due to some error in packing. Unfortunately, it can't cover acts of hijinx by third-party shipping concerns -- for example, if a package sent through USPS were to be beaten up by a team of gorillas à la that iconic 1970s luggage commercial that everyone mistakenly remembers as an ad for Samsonite. It was for American Tourister -- we just checked because we're thorough that way.

About Acme Book & Anvil

We took a sabbatical to trade in vintage musical gear and hunt wild mushrooms, as one does, and during the whirlwind of it all, we got heavily into original books with color plates from the Golden Age of Illustration, meaning from roughly 1900 until the last really nice stuff in that lineage from the late 1930s (including late works by Harry Clarke and Arthur Rackham and credible reprint editions of earlier titles). Yes, we have fun. Our official métier is out-of-print academic books, leaning in a general way toward the social sciences and Continental philosophy. In actual practice, a lot of those books are presently hanging out in boxes waiting to be listed, with some boxes of fiction first editions (along an Updike-Cheever sort of continuum, with a García Márquez-Calvino cross-axis) and the cargo of splendid Edwardian illustrated gift books, as above. The takeaway: Got a lot coming up here.
