London: John Murray, 1859. Hardcover. Very good. Illustrated by Owen Jones. 4to. Unpainted (approximately 300p). Half blue morocco gilt, blue cloth; armorial bookplate and bookseller stamp on the front pastedown. Frontispiece engraving of Lockhart. Chromolithographed title now mounted, chromolithographed publisher's imprint, contents, introduction and section pages, ornamental borders and vignettes in color throughout, all by Owen Jones. With textual illustrations by several other hands. Occasional light foxing, and endpaper offset form the leather turn-ins, else a very good copy. Considered the first of the chromolithographed books and the first by Owen Jones. The Ballads are arranged as Historical Ballads, Moorish Ballads, and Romantic Ballads. El Cid figures prominently.
