About This Item

Berlin/New York: Asher and Dodd Mead, 1902. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Four large folios (16" x 21") in plain brown buckram. 144pp. text and commentary (by William von Steinem) illustrated with 165 full page plates (about one third in color, about half lithographs in sepia and the rest line drawings on various background colors). The images of hundreds of artifacts are printed on very heavy stiff card stock and tipped in on linen stubs and consequently very easily removed for storage or to put in a portfolio (as it was originally issued). Notes and commentary on each of the images in ENGLISH. As well as earthenware, this has many drawings and chromo-lithographs of the full range of artifacts including weapons, utensils, headwear, ritual earthenware and figures, jewelry, feathered headdresses, etc. This is a gently ex-library set. There are NO markings on any of the plates and only one or two marks on the first pages of each volume. It is in excellent overall condition, with the exception of a handful of 1/2" chips only one of which is on a foredge, the rest at the bottom fore corner (dogeared triangles). Occasional finger smudges and ancient library dust marks, none affecting the images and all of which can be removed. A very good volume of this VERY SCARCE title..
