About This Item

Vale Street, Denbigh: J Williams, 1856. First Edition . Hardcover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. In contemporary embossed black cloth, corners and edges rubbed. Spine, titles in gilt, edges bumped and worn. Internally, text block edges sprinkled red, yellow endpapers, bookplate to fpd (James Watts, Abney Hall), half title, [6], [1], (ii only, [1], 4-362 pp, 5 illustrations within text, printed and published by J Williams, some browning to firsat and last few pages only. A very nice copy. Title continues: A descriptive history of the Castle, Borough, and Liberties; etc. (Bibl. Hist Wales 157A) WILLIAMS, cleric, poet, and antiquary, whose greatest achievement was his publication of the history of the town and lordship of Denbigh in two volumes: Ancient and Modern Denbigh (Denbigh, 1856) and The Records of Denbigh and its Lordship (Wrexham, 1860). To-day, we realise that the arrangement of the two volumes leaves much to be desired and that some of the 'facts' incorrect, but at that time they were regarded as an important contribution to the history of Wales in the middle ages. So far, nothing has appeared to supplant Ancient and Modern Denbigh. See NLW WBO.
