About This Item

London: Printed for Spencer Hickman, Printer to the R. Society, at the Rose in S Pauls Church-Yard, 1672 A good to very good copy in new full leather binding. With 3 black and white folding plates at the rear. Nehemiah Grew is known as the 'Father of Plant Anatomy'. This book, the culmination of 6 years work, was first delivered as a paper to the Royal Society and then subsequently published in 1672. This copy lacks the page containing the Royal Society Permission for Publication but is otherwise complete. The new full leather binding is in fine condition, with raised bands to spine and silver titles. There are new endpapers and a new initial blank. The title page has an old small ink inscription to the reverse. Contents: Dedication to the Royal Society 1pp; Letter to The Right Rev John , Lord Bishop of Chester 7pp; Preface 4 pp; contents summary 11 pp; latin preliminary 2pp; corrections and additions 1pp; text p1-186 (last page mis-paginated); 3 folding plates; half title - Explication of the Figures 15pp; Finis; original blank. The initial pages, particularly the dedications have some marking, and there is a light stain to the bottom outer page corners (margin only) affecting a few pages at the beginning and the end. Plate 2 has a small nick (? worming) to the top not affecting the figures. Contents otherwise in good to very good clean condition. A scarce and important work.

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
