The American journalist (editor of Saturday Review) fought a crippling life-threatening form or arthritis by mobilising the body's natural healing resources, including laughter, courage and tenacity, and with his doctor also learning from (and being open-minded about) the experiences of the patient. He also minimised taking drugs, and took ascorbic acid, which was controversial. The book contains six essays: the first about his illness, and the last about supportive letters he got from 3000 doctors after his essay on his illness was published in the 'New England Journal of Medicine'. (Modern reprint, after 1991, includes introduction by Rene Dubos.).
