[24], 107, [21], 16, 13-172 pp. Signatures: a4 A-U8, (U3, U4 misprinted T3, T4). De Back's treatise has a separate title-page. With lengthy eighteenth-century annotations concerning Harvey to both endpapers. Contemporary calf, spine expertly rebacked and with some gilt ruling and gilt-lettered label (boards slightly scratched and rubbed). Text little evenly browned, occasional minor spotting, small worm track to lower blank margin, a bit short at upper margin. Provenance: illegible signature, Trinity College Cambridge (inscribed on first free endpaper), also lettered "Lower" on fore-edge. A very good and clean copy. ----

The second English edition of Harvey's celebrated De motu cordis in which he sets forth his discovery and experimental proof of the circulation of the blood. This new edition is virtually a reprint of the first in English of 1653. The translation, described by Keynes as "a vigorous, if unpolished, version... in contemporary language", was based upon the Latin edition published at Rotterdam in 1648. Also included in this edition are a translation of James De Back's treatise on the blood in which he offers a "defence of Harvey's circulation", and Harvey's essays written in response to Jean Riolan's criticisms. - Visit our website for additional images and information.

Facsimile reprint of the original 1653 edition printed in London by Francis Leach for Richard Lowndes, a copy in the Yale University Medical History Library. Half-title states that this edition contains "excerpts," but the pagination is continuous and appears to contain the entirety of Wood's preface and Harvey's treatise..

First edition in English of De motu cordis (1628), in which was described the discovery and proof of the circulation of the blood; this is the very rare first issue with uncancelled title and this leaf unclipped by the printer (see below). Harvey's discovery and experimental proof of the circulation of the blood created a revolution in physiology comparable to the Copernican revolution in astronomy: it was to become "the cornerstone of modern physiology and medicine" (Garrison-Morton). De motu cordis "is probably the most important book in the history of medicine. What Vesalius was to anatomy, Harvey was to physiology; the whole scientific outlook on the human body was transformed, and behind almost every important medical advance in modern times lies the work of Harvey" (Heirs of Hippocrates).
