About This Item

London: George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1938 . Cloth. Good. 9" by 5.5". None. The scarce first thus of this translation of the Analects of Confucius in the original publisher's cloth binding. First thus of The Analects of Confucius translated and annotated by Arthur Waley in the original publisher's cloth binding. The Analects is an ancient Chinese book of sayings and ideas from Confucius, the ancient Chinese philosopher whose teachings and philosophies underpin East Asian culture and society. Arthur Waley was an English sinologist and translated many Chinese and Japanese works, particularly poetry, into English. He was honoured with CBE in 1952 and invested as Companion of Honour in 1956.A scarce work with only three copies held in libraries. Prior owner's book plates to the first pastedown and first free endpaper. From the library of Lord Raglan, Fitzroy John Somerset. Raglan"s great-great-grandfather was Field Marshal Fitzroy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan and hero of the Battle at Inkerman and Alma in the Crimean War. He also served as military secretary to the Duke of Wellington. He died in the Crimea in 1855. The house in which the library was situated, Cefn Tilla Court, was purchased by the Raglan Memorial committee for his descendants. Lord Raglan was a keen collector of anthropology and folklore, with many of the works in his extensive library focusing upon this topic. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, sound. There is some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. There is some light marking to the boards and some fading to the spine. There is some slight wear to the cloth to the rear hinge. Prior owner's book plates to the first pastedown and first free endpaper. There is some light spotting to the fore edge. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with the odd spot. Good
