While publicizing the images as 'photographic', under examination they are printed according to a lithographic process on a glossy paper stock in deep sepia tones, clearly made to closely resemble and compete with the much-admired photographs of Carleton Watkins and others who had popularized Western American and world views and brought out the artistic uses of photography; Images approximately 8 3/4" x 12 1/2"; Contents: Part 1: United States 9 (of 10 - lacking Pike's Peak) images: Giant Red Wood Trees California, Niagara Falls, Falls of the Yosemite, Rapids below Niagara Falls, Mammoth Hot Springs Yellowstone, Lower Falls of Yellowstone, Shoshone Falls, Cathedral Spires Garden of the Gods and a very dramatic The Old Carreta Laguna New Mexico, Native American & pueblo scene. Part 2: England - 4 views, Ireland -2 , Scotland - 3, Wales-1 view; Part 3: Switzerland - 3, Greece-2, Germany-3, Spain-2; Part 4: Spain-1, France-3, Italy-6 views; no publisher, photographic studio, place or date noted, circa 1885 - however each image with number and the title and with several of the photos having the Knapp Co. imprint as well; A total of 39 (of 40) images in the four parts; all other parts collated complete according to the lists found on the front of each wrapper; original printed paper wrap covers, with lettering and ornamentation, border decorations printed in red and black; some edgewear and chipping to covers, dustiness; one back cover lacking, others detached or nearly so; wraps in good condition; photos with light wear and in very good condition, an interesting group of large U.S. and world views and an intriguing process; an OCLC search at time of cataloging did not reveal any holdings institutionally for this series. .
