Munchen: Kurt Wolff Verlag, 1927. Paperback. First Edition, the scarce 'wraps issue.' Octavo. 391pp. Bound in the publisher's stiff wraps with clamshell box. Shows marginal thumbing of the corners; a small light spot of discoloration at the front cover; spine with creases from reading; lacking the first blank; page bearing the publisher device has been partially restored at the topmost; very slight foxing of the title and half-title page, else the binding is strong and tight, the text is clean and unmarked, and the covers remain colorful and distinct. The front and back board of the clamshell box show a damp-stain; several small scuffs, else sound and bright. As pictured.
Synopsis
Karl Rossman has been banished by his parents to America, following a family scandal. There, with unquenchable optimism, he throws himself into the strange experiences that lie before him as he slowly makes his way into the interior of the great continent.Although Kafka's first novel (begun in 1911 and never finished), can be read as a menacing allegory of modern life, it is also infused with a quite un-Kafkaesque blitheness and sunniness, brought to life in this lyrical translation that returns to the original manuscript of the book.
