About This Item

Hartford: Elihu Geer, 1862. First Edition (thus). Hardcover. Very good +. 12mo, 489pp., illustrated. A nice, clean, copy, very good or better in the publisher's dark green bolindstamped cloth. Gilt reasonably bright on spine. Trivial shallow insect damage at the fore-edge, and a stain on the margin of two leaves. Really a tight, clean copy. Folding map in excellent condition, despite a few gentle creases at the extremities. Includes many, many advertisements printed in different-colored ink. Bears the ownership signature of "E. K. Root, Esq, President" on the front paste-down. This is certainly Elisha K. Root, the notable machinist who helped to revolutionize processes and machinery at Colt's manufacturing operations in Connecticut under the leadership of Samuel Colt. Root took over Colt's position as President upon the latter's death in 1862, and held the position until his own death in 1865. Having lived in Hartford for a decade and a half at the time of publication, he likely didn't have great need for the city guide, which explains its unmolested state. A surprisingly scarce volume, with hardly any holdings in worldwide libraries for this or any proximate annual guides.

About Cleveland Book Company

We are proud members of the ABAA.

As a small, independent bookseller in Cleveland, Ohio, I deal in general used, rare, and antiquarian books, autographs, manuscripts, pamphlets, and personal and family papers in all subjects. My family has been in the antiquarian book business since 1971. Are you moving, downsizing, or doing some spring cleaning? Did you inherit or otherwise come into some old books? Or, maybe you've collected modern novels from the last thirty or fifty years. No matter what kinds of books you have, we'd love to take a look at them! We travel throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, southern Michigan, and eastern Indiana, and will travel farther in some cases to look at whole libraries or even just a few particularly interesting books. Give us a call at (216) 352-3940 and we can talk more about the kinds of books you have.
