About This Item
Basic Books, 2005. First edition2. With publisher's card tipped in. The story of the great American traveler in Jefferson's time. His short life beginning at birth in 1771 and his death along the Nile while still traveling in 1789, Ledyard began by carving out a canoe from a tree he felled after abandoning his studies at Dartmouth - he made his dug out canoe and paddled 140 miles down the Connecticut River. He also sailed with Captain Cook and became the first American to see Alaska, Hawaii and the Pacific Northwest. 20 years before Lewis and Clark, he conceived of an idea with Jefferson of walking around the world, which he attempted before he was arrested in Siberia on Catherine the Great and deported. You take over from here. It's all in the book. Fine and bright in like illustrated dustjacket with crisp bright text throughout.
