Extended Description and Notes
Harcourt, Brace and Co., Inc, 1927. Hardcover. Very Good. Collectible first edition, first printing of Carl Sandberg's groundbreaking compilation of 280 "songs, ballads, ditties, brought together from all regions of America," approximately 100 of which were published for the first time. Signed in black ink on half title page by three-time Pulitzer Prize winning author and poet Carl Sandburg. Signature unconditionally guaranteed to pass any COA examination. "Copyright 1927" statement to copyright page with no additional printings indicated. Wildly popular and in print for 70 years, this collection of folk music was broadly acclaimed and called a landmark by legendary folk singer Pete Seeger. Numerous illustrations throughout, many with Black American themes. Each song is accompanied by an historical introduction, sheet music format and complete verses. Bound in dark blue buckram with orange lettering to front and spine panels. Text block edges stained orange. Lacks issued dust jacket. 495 pp. 10 1/2" x 8". Tight, unmarked copy with minimal shelf wear and slight wrinkling to head and tail of spine panel. An unusually presentable copy signed by celebrated poet and author Carl Sandburg, whom Lyndon B. Johnson described thus: "Carl Sandburg was more than the voice of America, more than the poet of its strength and genius. He was America."
