These islands in the Central Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and Samoa were mostly uninhabited, and were exploited for guano in the 19th century, but with the rise of air travel and especially the war with Japan in the Pacific they took on added importance. Illustrated with photographs and many maps. Index. 253 pp
