First edition of this important American materia medica, and the first published work of James Thacher. A comprehensive materia medica, reviewing the qualities and uses of hundreds remedies including emetics, narcotics, diuretics, oils, acids, and much, much, more. It served as a prototype for the first American pharmacopeia, published in 1820. The DAB calls the book "a sound application of American pharmacopoeial principles." Thacher, (1754-1844), a surgeon during the Revolution, was America's first medical biographer and the author of several important medical treatises. AUSTIN 1877. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 21476.
