About This Item

(Bahrain, The American Mission Hospital Society, 1993). Author's presentation inscription on front free endpaper. 4to; original black rexine; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. 288; profusely illustrated. A little very faint spotting to endpapers. Near fine condition. "Modern medical services first became available in the Arabian Gulf region during the last decade of the nineteenth century. These were conducted by pioneer missionaries of the Reformed Church in America, who first settled in Basra at the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Both there and elsewhere as these men and women traveled about the Gulf, they offered simple treatments and basic medications to those who sought their assistance. In time, physicians and nurses were recruited for the sake of establishing permanent services in the different locations occupied by the Reformed Church's Arabian Mission. … In Bahrain the American Mission Hospital continues to serve local residents with the technology of today, while maintaining the spirit of those pioneers who sacrificed so much to establish the medical work here in years gone by. Today, the hospital functions as an independent, non-profit, private community hospital under the auspices of the American Mission Hospital Society, Bahrain." .
