London: George Allen and Unwin, 1952. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 9.5" by 7.5". Not Stated . Smart first edition of this extensive study of the Kon-Tiki expedition of 1947. The first edition of this work, following Thor Heyerdahls' successful book on his experiences during the expedition titled The Kon Tiki Expedition, first published in 1948, where he tells of his travels across the Pacific Ocean on a balsa tree raft. With this expedition Norwegian writer Heyerdahl wanted to show, by using only the materials and technologies available to those people at the time, that people from South America could have reached Polynesia during pre-Columbian times. This extensive book is a study behind this theory. Illustrated with a frontispiece and ninety full page plates, some in colour, well as further illustrations in text. With six of eleven coloured folding maps loosely inserted. From the library of Lord Raglan, Fitzroy John Somerset. Raglan"s great-great-grandfather was Field Marshal Fitzroy… Read More

Illustrated dust jacket. , Notes: Thor Heyerdahl (1914 – 2002) was a Norwegian adventurer and ethnographer with a background in zoology, botany, and geography. He became notable for his Kon-Tiki expedition in 1947, in which he sailed 8,000 km (5,000 mi) across the Pacific Ocean in a hand-built raft from South America to the Tuamotu Islands. The expedition was designed to demonstrate that ancient people could have made long sea voyages, creating contacts between separate cultures. This was linked to a diffusionist model of cultural development. Heyerdahl subsequently made other voyages designed to demonstrate the possibility of contact between widely separated ancient people. He was appointed a government scholar in 1984. Bookplate of Peter Antony Lanyon-Orgill on verso of top cover. , Size: 4to (246x182mm). ,… Read More
