About This Item

New York: St. Martin's Press, 1997. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. Hardcover. 988 pp. with index. Fine (small prev. owner name and address corner of the front free endpaper), in fine dust jacket. Absorbing story of the nation's leading opposition radical newspaper from 1790-1800. Founded and published by Benjamin Bache (Benjamin Franklin's grandson) and William Duane, the publication's avowed object was to keep America's Founding Fathers true to their original mission. To that end Bache and Duane embraced emerging Jeffersonian republicanism, attacked George Washington as an incompetent commander-in-chief and attacked John Adams as a monarchist. Both editors were arrested under the Sedition Acts.
