First edition. 4to; [56pp]; gilt-stamped blue buckram over board, title to front board and spine; bright orange endpapers; gift inscription to ffep; light erasure upper right corner ffep; alphabet letter with text and full page color illustration; unclipped color pictorial dust jacket, age toning of paper, chipping to edges, light soiling, damp staining to front; .near fine in very good dj. Baumgarten 173; Peterson, Solt C. A 1942 Caldecott Honor Award winner, the book takes the alphabet and letter by letter highlights a part of American history. Some of their illustrations reflect some of the mid-20th racial biases. An interesting telling of a simplistic American history by beloved children's author/illustrators.
