About This Item
London: The Bodley Head. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1940. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. A fine copy of this example from the Limited First Edition of only 500 copies in a nice price-clipped dust jacket. Archibald MacLeish (May 7, 1892 April 20, 1982) was an American poet, writer, and the Librarian of Congress. He is associated with the Modernist school of poetry. He received three Pulitzer Prizes for his work. During World War II, MacLeish assisted with the development of the new "Research and Analysis Branch" of the Office of Strategic Services, the precursor to the Central Intelligence Agency. The operations of the Branch were overseen by Archibald MacLeish (Librarian of Congress) and William L. Langer. During the 1930s MacLeish was a great admirer of Franklin D. Roosevelt and his progressive policies. This book reflects MacLeish's developing liberal humanism, promoting the pursuit of freedom and communal solidarity to keep fascism at bay and to retain and exercise the principles upon which the United States was founded.; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings. .
