Gilted leading text edges. Gift inscription to fEP dated 1890. Trace soiling to upper text edges of four pages (frontispiece, title page, contents & Preface). Pictorial view of America's natural landscape in the 1800s. In the assembly of this volume, Williams endeavored to select landscapes "... whose names have for years been familiar as household words, but of whose sublime beauty and magnifcence... the great mass of our population have had no adequate conception." He saw the artists engravings as songs to the grandeur of nature, and the accompanying text less the volume be "songs without words." It is time period of great rising cities, laying of railroads, bridging broad rivers and erecting viaducts in a vast land. Illustrations, more often than not, include man. Fine copy with a sound but deplorable hard cover & no dust jacket.
