Santiago: Editorial Nascimento, 1954. Limited Edition. The definitive edition of the Chilean Nobel Prize-winner's finest longer poems, published in honor of his 50th birthday celebration. Inspired by his journey to the ancient Peruvian city nestled in the Andes, the poem would later become the second part of Neruda's Canto General. Loyola 313; Becco 97; Fisher 47. One of 1,000 numbered copies signed by the author, this being copy no.529. Quarto (27cm); original pictorial card wrappers; [ii],[4],5-77,[5]pp; with photographic illustrations throughout by Martin Chambi. Moderate wear to wrapper extremities, with some toning and scattered soil to same, and a few contemporary holograph notes (in ink) on rear wrapper; Chilean booksellers rubber-stamp to preliminary blank, with scattered foxing to text edges and margins; Very Good, lacking the bibliographic insert on green stock.

Chile: Nascimento, 1954. First printing of this edition. One of 1000 numbered copies (this being No. 680) SIGNED by the author. This copy retains the scarce insert on green paper that was issued with all copies, a bibliographic note on the genesis and publication history of the poem by Jorge Sanhueza. The first definitive edition of the poems, including the Chambi photographs referenced in "The Latin American Photobook." The poems first appeared as "Canto II" in Neruda's "Canto General" (1950), and have regularly been translated into English. Moderate toning and light rubbing overall, with light bumps at the extremities, else Near Fine. A superior example of a title not often found in collectible condition. Becco 84. Loyola 292. (Santiago, Chile): Nascimento, 1954. Softcover. First edition. Quarto. Illustrated from black and white photographs by Martin Chambi. Pictorial wrappers with yapped edges. Library stamp on front blank. Edges moderately worn worn, lower wrap lightly stained, top corner creased throughout, spine lightly toned with a bit of loss at the crown and a tiny horizontal tear, very good and sound, lacking the insert. Copy 593 of 1,000 numbered copies Signed by Neruda.

Santiago de Chile: Ediciones de Libreria Neira, 1948. First edition. The first edition of Neruda's masterpiece, later incorporated into Canto General. One of 500 copies numbered in Arabic, an additional 20 numbered in Roman were not for sale. Folio, 25 x 38 cm. 48 pages, 7 full page woodcuts by José Venturelli. Neruda first visited Machu Picchu in 1943, however he did not begin writing the poem until 1945. The French writer Roger Caillois visited him while he was composing it, and began to publish his translations in January, 1946, but the first partial publication in Spanish did not occur until July 1946. This first edition in book form was published by a Santiago bookstore, a courageous effort at a time when Neruda was in hiding from the police in a friend's basement. Original wrappers, a little tanned and with some small areas of paper restoration to the edges; a very good copy of a book scarce in commerce. Becco 84; Loyola 292 (misdated as 1947).

Very Good, with spine showing a neat repair, and front cover joint about 1/3 split at bottom edge. Wraps show toning and light wear, especially at yapped edges, light rubbing. Pages toned. A lovely copy of this fragile production of one of Neruda's best-known longer poetic works.

Santiago: Nascimento,, 1954. Amor hasta la noche abrupta Signed limited edition, number 24 of 1,000 copies signed by the author; there were also 10 hors commerce copies, lettered A to J. The collection was originally published in 1948, and was translated into English in 1966. This limited edition, illustrated with 11 images by Peruvian photographer Martín Chambi (1891-1973), was printed on the occasion of Neruda's 50th birthday. Folio. Original wrappers lettered in blue and yellow, sepia photograph by Martín Chambi to front wrapper, publisher's device to rear wrapper in yellow. With original glassine. With 11 photographs by Chambi; 4-page bibliography by Jorge Sanhueza loosely inserted, as issued. Wrappers slightly marked, glassine creased and torn at extremities, a few small chips to extremities, a near-fine copy.
