In this novel, Kingsley seta out to expose the social injustice in the clothing trade and the trials and tribulations of agricultural labourers. It is a fictional autobiography of a young tailor, whose aspirations exceed the expectations of his class. It also gives an insight into the Chartist campaign with which Kingsley was involved in the 1840s. Charles Kingsley (1819-1875) was a broad church priest, a university professor, social reformer, historian, novelist and poet. He is particularly associated with Christian socialism, the working men's college, and forming labour cooperatives, which failed, but encouraged later working reforms. 8 pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with only minor wear to the extremities and a scattering of small stains to the boards. Internally, binding is slightly strained in a couple of places but otherwise firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, apart from some offsetting and spotting to the first couple of pages. Very Good
