(Portugal, 1885. Godinho, Consuelo. Oblong octavo. (27)ff. First edition of this luxurious, allegorical alphabet by Godinho, with a full-page lithograph for each letter. The subjects are often highly symbolic, such as a soldier inside the letter G for "Guerra", an odalisque sleeping in the N for "Nudez", or a modern woman in the shadow of the I, machinery in her hand and a train and smokestack in the background, for "Industria". The only published work by Godinho, whose photograph is mounted to the title page. She came from a renowned line of Lisbon calligraphers; her grandfather, Manoel Nunes Godinho earned the title of "Calligrapho da Casa Real", or the royal calligrapher. Bound in red cloth with black border and gilt title. Some soiling to extremities, including bumps to corners and some rubbing to edges, else near fine.
