About This Item
Toronto: Ryerson, (1951). First edition. Octavo, cream boards printed in deep blue, pp. 142. Illustration of pole vaulter repeated at the start of each chapter. Fictional account written by Hewitt for young readers, telling the story of a young Canadian boy growing up, inspired by his idol, Syl Apps. This copy is signed, "with best wishes" by Syl Apps Jr., on the front free endpaper. App's son was a professional hockey player with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1970s, and later played for the Rangers and the Kings. Foxing to page edges, faint evidence of erasure on endpaper, else very good in a used, but good dust jacket, showing edge chips and tears. .
