Titles printed in red and black. Frontispiece portrait of Jöcher to v.1, engraved by J.C.G. Fritsch after the painting by E.G. Haussmann.

Jöcher was a professor and librarian at the University of Leipzig. He spent decades compiling his magnum opus, the Allgemeines Gelehrten-Lexicon, containing over 70,000 entries covering scholars in all fields. It has remained a landmark reference with biographical information and anecdotes not found elsewhere.
