Jöcher was a professor and librarian at the University of Leipzig. He spent decades compiling his magnum opus, the Allgemeines Gelehrten-Lexicon, containing over 70,000 entries covering scholars in all fields. It has remained a landmark reference with biographical information and anecdotes not found elsewhere.
