All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Marie Remarque. Published by The Heritage Press, New York, 1969. Introduction by Harry Hansen. Illustrated by John Groth in black and white and full color. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Green cloth spine over dark grey cloth boards, with gilt spine titles over black. Housed in black slipcase. Volume is in as new condition with bright, white pages. Slipcase has very light shelf wear. John Groth (1902-1988), was a noted New York painter and illustrator. He was a friend of Hemingway (the latter wrote the Introduction to Groth's own book, Studio: Europe). The first Art Director of Esquire Magazine. Groth was an artist-correspondent for leading newspapers in three wars: WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Erich Maria Remarque (1898-1970) was a German veteran of World War I. His searing story describes the German soldiers' extreme physical and mental trauma during the war as well as the detachment from civilian life felt by many upon returning home from the war. All Quiet on the Western Front became an international bestseller and was adapted to film several times.
