About This Item

London: Faber & Faber Limited, 1945. Cloth. Good+. Second impression. Slim 8vo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Leading edge untrimmed. Shabby boards, lean to spine. Circular Canadian Auxiliary Services stamp in turquoise to front pastedown (associated offsetting to ffep), 'Gillian Lunn' in pencil to ffep. Two postcards of London belonging to Gillian Lunn laid in (perhaps relating to locations within the narrative, which opens on Westminster Bridge?). Pencil-scoring to chapter eight, some dog-earring, marginal loss to leading edges of final page and rear endpaper. Else, clean and tidy, especially for the war economy paper and for what appears to be Lunn's own working copy. In Berthold Wolpe's flaming typographcial dust jacket: over-large, edgewear, spine sunned, joints tender and rubbed, chips and closed tears to spine ends. A robust association copy of Williams' seventh and final 'spiritual shocker'. Good+/ good+ Charles Williams (1886-1945) was a British novelist and theological writer. He was invited to join the Inklings when he moved to Oxford in 1939 with the Oxford University Press, for which he was a reader. C. S. Lewis and Williams were already friends, having begun a correspondence a few years earlier, and upon meeting 'our friendship rapidly grew inward to the bone' (Lewis cited in ODNB). Oxford's English faculty was depleted by the war and Williams soon made a reputation as a lecturer and a private tutor. He died unexpectedly in May 1945, a week after V-Day. Gillian Lunn served as Honorary Secretary of the Charles Williams Society in the 1980s and '90s.
